Here in three volumes is the single most important historical document of the metaphysical religious movement known as New Thought — a century-and-a-half-old tradition of spiritual regeneration, human well-being, and physical healing based on a still revolutionary concept of God, Humanity, and the Universe. PHINEAS PARKHURST QUIMBY PHINEAS PARKHURST QUIMBY (1802-1866) was a New England clockmaker whose investigations of mesmerism and clairvoyance led to the early science of the uncharted realms of the subconscious mind. Here it was that he discovered the source of illness and the fountainhead of mental and spiritual healing. Disease, he saw, was basically an error of the mind, appearing in the body. Having left mesmerism behind, Quimby carried on a healing practice that soon became the talk of all New England and environs—influential, too, in the lives and careers of early New Thought greats as well as the founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy. THE COMPLETE WRITINGS OF PHINEAS PARKHURST QUIMBY allows us to track Quimby's investigations through engrossing encounters with patients burdened with problems that neither medicine nor psychotherapy succeeds in banishing. And here are Quimby's continuously refined efforts to make sense and science of his irrefutable healings. Here too is the fascinating journal kept by Quimby's assistant, Lucius Burkmar—a chronicle of Quimby's activities and a vivid sketch of mid-19th century New England. Until now, only selectively edited portions of some of these papers have been available in print. Here, for the first time, they appear in their authentic, uncut entirety. Ervin Seale, "dean" of Quimby studies, provides a preface that both tells the story of these long-unavailable papers and sets the stage for our adventure with them. |
