Phineas Parkhurst Quimby Collections

The Major Original Collections of
Phineas Parkhurst Quimby Materials

Library of Congress

Manuscript Collection of the Library of Congress, Washington D.C.  In 1930, the collection of original Quimby writings, which were the source of articles used by Dr. Horatio W. Dresser in his 1921 book, THE QUIMBY MANUSCRIPTS, were placed in the Library of Congress by P. P Quimby's heirs.  A history of the writings and an account of their presentation was published in the New York Times of April 6th, 1930.  In 1953 the collection was converted to a gift by two of Quimby's granddaughters, Mrs. Katharine Quimby Carter & Elizabeth Pineo.  The collection includes:

11 handwritten copy-books of Quimby's articles concerning religion, medicine and science.  One ledger with newspaper articles pasted to the pages.  Several copies of "Questions and Answers", letters from Mary Baker Patterson (Eddy) to Quimby, various handwritten notes by Quimby, letters from Dr. Quimby to his patients.

This collection of Quimby materials has been microfilmed and is available on three microfilm reels from the Library of Congress.  Lucius C. Burkmar's private journal of 1843-1845, which outlines his travels with Quimby has also been microfilmed and is available through the Library of Congress.

Boston University

Historical Manuscript Collection of the Mugar Memorial Library of Boston University, Boston, MA.  In 1946 or 1947, it was discovered by Erroll Stafford Collie and Dr. Ervin Seale, the Quimby heirs still had additional copies and previously unpublished materials of Phineas Parkhurst Quimby in their possession.  At the suggestion and assistance of Dr. C. Alan Anderson, these materials were placed with Boston University.  The holdings include one box of materials:

Nine bounded volumes of Quimby's articles dating from 1859-1883 concerning religion, medicine, and science.  There are also over 100 articles, lectures, and other writings, some of which are written by other individuals.  Also included in the collection are 48 letters mostly written to Quimby dating from 1843-1864, three patents (two are signed by President Andrew Jackson), accompanied by 13 black and white prints, pencil sketches, and six microfilm reels.

There is a listing of the collection, which is available to scholars who visit their facility to conduct their research.  The collection has been microfilmed for conservation purposes, but copies of the material are not available.  It should be noted that this collection was combined with the Library of Congress collection, and comprise the source materials for the three volume set, Phineas Parkhurst Quimby: THE COMPLETE WRITINGS, Ervin Seale, Editor.  In volume number one of THE COMPLETE WRITINGS, beginning on page 5 of the Preface, Dr. Seale gives an account of his meeting with the Quimby granddaughters and the discovery of this collection of Quimby materials.
